• Medical Research Ethics Committee (MEC)
  • The Medical Review Ethics Committee (MEC) (Medisch Ethische Toetsings Commissie – METC) is a committee accredited by the Central Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (CCMO) and based upon the Medical Research Involving Human Subjects Act (Wet medisch-wetenschappelijk onderzoek met mensen – WMO). This means that the MEC has the authority to review and pass judgement on medical research protocols involving human subjects, which is initiated and carried out by one or more Maastricht UMC+ or FHML staff members.

In a review, the MEC weighs the scientific aspects of a research proposal against the objections and risks for the human participants of the research project. The right to review some kinds of medical-scientific research is reserved for the CCMO.
Scientific research involving human subjects cannot start until an authorised committee has passed a positive judgement on the research protocol and its execution.
